All 7 Isaac Asimov Movies And TV Shows Ranked: From «Nightfall» to «Foundation», a Journey Through Time and Robots

Isaac Asimov, the maestro of science fiction, left behind a legacy so vast that adapting his work for the screen has always been a challenge. This article takes us on a journey through seven different attempts, ranking them from the forgettable to the truly magnificent.

Bottom of the Barrel:

We start with the infamous «Nightfall» double-feature (1988 and 1990). These two movies are less adaptations and more cautionary tales about what happens when ambition outstrips talent. Roger Corman’s involvement might have hinted at greatness, but even Julie Corman’s fondness for the 1988 version can’t mask their shortcomings.

Then comes «Robots» (1988), an interactive VCR mystery game that tries to be clever but ultimately falls short. It’s a fun party trick for die-hard Asimov fans, but hardly a cinematic masterpiece.

Middling Attempts:

«The End of Eternity» (1983), a Soviet production, surprises with its watchability given the decade it was made. While far from perfect, it manages to capture some of the essence of Asimov’s novel, making it a decent time capsule of Cold War sci-fi.

The Blockbuster:

Will Smith enters the scene with «I, Robot» (2004). This action-packed blockbuster takes liberties with Asimov’s three laws of robotics but delivers thrilling entertainment nonetheless. It might not be a faithful adaptation, but it successfully introduces Asimov’s ideas to a wider audience.

The Triumphant Return:

Finally, we reach the pinnacle: «Foundation» (2021). This Apple TV+ series is everything an Asimov adaptation should be: ambitious, visually stunning, and intellectually stimulating. With a stellar cast and a faithful yet daring approach to the source material, «Foundation» proves that Asimov’s universe can translate beautifully onto the screen.

This ranking serves as a testament to the enduring power of Asimov’s work. While some adaptations struggle to capture his brilliance, «Foundation» reminds us why he remains one of the greatest sci-fi authors of all time.
